Demartek To Present SSD and FCoE Technologies at the Storage Decisions Conference in San Francisco, November 2009
16 October 2009
By popular demand, Dennis Martin, President of Demartek, and Wikibon Mastermind, will present two sessions at the Storage Decisions Conference in San Francisco, November 17, 2009.
The two sessions will be technical sessions on:
- Deep Dive into Solid State Storage -- the Technologies and Architectures
- Unified Storage Networking and FCoE and Data Center “Backbone” Architectures
As is his custom, Dennis will include test results from his work with these technologies from the Demartek lab.
UPDATE — Dennis Martin will be speaking at the Storage Decisions conferences in calendar year 2010. Check his Speaking Schedule for details.
Deep Dive into Solid State Storage -- the Technologies and Architectures
This is an in-depth look at the architectures and technologies of solid state storage devices. The presentation will describe solid state in detail, and compare solid state with traditional magnetic media. In addition, Dennis will include some of the results from his solid state storage performance testing of Microsoft applications in the Demartek lab. Among the topics discussed are:
- DRAM vs. NAND Flash
- How NAND Flash Works
- SLC vs. MLC
- Bad Block Management, Wear-leveling & other error management techniques
- Read & Write Performance
- Currently Available Capacities and Form Factors
- Comparisons to Magnetic Media
- Demartek Lab Performance Comparisons
Not “Just a Switch” Anymore -- Data Center “Backbone” Architectures
The leading switch vendors have revealed their visions of a unified data center network infrastructure. It sound good, but what are the ramifications for the storage networking infrastructures you have in place. This session will cover:
- The technologies that are available now and what’s still needed
- Key protocols and standards, such as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and Data Center Bridging (DCB)* that will make the unified data center work
- The advantages and drawbacks of having an integrated network
- How will currently installed storage networks be affected
- Discussion of various products available today
* DCB is also known as Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) and other similar names.
Demartek plans to continue testing solid state storage and unified storage networking with FCoE in the Demartek lab. Check the Demartek FCoE Zone and the Demartek SSD Zone for additional information.
